E. Norman Gardiner

Edward Norman Gardiner (1864–1930) was an English classical scholar and schoolmaster, an authority on the athletics of ancient Greece. He taught for many years at Epsom College and devoted his research to Greek sport, combining literary evidence with the study of vase paintings, sculpture and archaeological remains. His Greek Athletic Sports and Festivals was followed by Olympia: Its History and Remains and Athletics of the Ancient World. His books, written for students and general readers alike, long shaped the understanding of the ancient Olympic games.
