E. K. Chambers (1866–1954) was an English literary scholar who spent his working life as a civil servant in the Board of Education, rising to second secretary, and did his research in his spare time. The Mediaeval Stage of 1903, in two volumes, traced the drama from the minstrels and folk plays to the mysteries and moralities; The Elizabethan Stage of 1923, in four, assembled the facts about the court, the companies, the playhouses and the plays of Shakespeare's age; and William Shakespeare: A Study of Facts and Problems of 1930 became the standard biography. He also wrote on Arthur and Coleridge.
