Cynthia Stockley (1873–1936) was a novelist born in South Africa who grew up in Rhodesia and set many of her books there. She worked as an actress and journalist, married three times and lived at various periods in England, France and the United States. Her novels, beginning with Virginia of the Rhodesians in 1903 and including Poppy, The Claw, Wanderfoot and Ponjola, were popular romances of colonial life and of women struggling against convention, and several were filmed in the silent era. She was found dead in her London flat in 1936, having taken her own life.
