Crawford Howell Toy (1836–1919) was an American scholar of Hebrew and the history of religions, born in Norfolk, Virginia. He served in the Confederate army, studied in Berlin, and taught at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary until 1879, when his acceptance of modern biblical criticism forced his resignation. Harvard made him Hancock Professor of Hebrew the following year, and he taught there for nearly three decades, becoming a Unitarian. His works include a commentary on Proverbs, Judaism and Christianity, and Introduction to the History of Religions, published in 1913, a systematic survey of the ideas and customs underlying religion everywhere.
