Cornelius Mathews (1817–1889) was an American writer and editor in New York, one of the leaders of the Young America movement, which called for a national literature independent of British models. With Evert Duyckinck he edited the magazine Arcturus, and he campaigned for international copyright. His varied works include the novels Behemoth and The Career of Puffer Hopkins, satire, poetry and plays. In 1850 he was among the party at a famous picnic in the Berkshires with Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Later he reworked Native American legends from Schoolcraft's collections in The Indian Fairy Book.
