Constance Fenimore Woolson (1840–1894) was an American novelist and short-story writer, a grandniece of James Fenimore Cooper. Raised in Cleveland, she wrote stories of the Great Lakes, collected in Castle Nowhere, and of the postwar South, in Rodman the Keeper, before publishing novels such as Anne, East Angels, Jupiter Lights and Horace Chase. From 1879 she lived in Europe, in England and Italy, and became a close friend of Henry James. She died after a fall from her window in Venice. Her stories of expatriate life were gathered after her death in The Front Yard and Dorothy, and Other Italian Stories.
