Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley (1843–1898) was an English clergyman and antiquary who made the study of English surnames his life's work. Born in Lancashire, he was educated at Oxford, held curacies and then the living of Ulverston, and became a canon of Carlisle Cathedral. English Surnames: Their Sources and Significations, first published in 1873, classified family names by origin and traced them through medieval records; it was followed by Curiosities of Puritan Nomenclature and by the posthumous Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, completed by his widow, which remained the standard reference for decades.
