Charles Rollin (1661–1741) was a French historian and educator. The son of a Paris cutler, he became professor of eloquence at the Collège Royal and rector of the University of Paris, but his sympathy for the Jansenists cost him several posts. In retirement he wrote the Treatise on Studies (1726), a guide to teaching that long shaped French schools, and the Ancient History of the Egyptians, Carthaginians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Medes and Persians, Macedonians and Grecians (1730 to 1738), followed by an unfinished Roman History. Translated into English, his histories were standard reading for students in Britain and America.
