Charles Neufeld (1856–1918) was a German merchant and writer known for his long captivity in the Sudan. Trading in Egypt and on the Sudan frontier, he was captured by the forces of the Mahdist state in 1887 and held for more than eleven years at Omdurman, much of the time in chains, until the Anglo-Egyptian army took the city in 1898. His account of the ordeal, A Prisoner of the Khaleefa, attracted wide attention. He also wrote Under the Rebel's Reign, an adventure novel of two young Germans caught up in revolt in Egypt.
