Charles Dudley Warner (1829–1900) was an American essayist, novelist and editor. Born in Plainfield, Massachusetts, he practiced law in Chicago before joining the Hartford Courant, which he later co-owned and edited, and he also worked as an editor of Harper's Magazine. His humorous My Summer in a Garden (1870) made him popular, and he followed it with Backlog Studies, travel books and biographies of Captain John Smith and Washington Irving. With his Hartford neighbor Mark Twain he wrote The Gilded Age (1873), whose title came to name an era. He also edited a large Library of the World's Best Literature.
