Charles Campbell

Charles Campbell (1807–1876) was an American historian of Virginia. Born in Petersburg and educated at Princeton, he kept a school in his native town for much of his life and gave his leisure to the colonial records. He edited The Bland Papers and the Orderly Book of General Andrew Lewis, contributed to the Southern Literary Messenger, and published An Introduction to the History of the Colony and Ancient Dominion of Virginia in 1847, which he expanded into his History of 1860, long the fullest account of the colony from Raleigh to the Revolution. He was a correspondent of Jared Sparks and other historians of his day.
