Carolyn Wells (1862–1942) was an American writer of humor, verse, children's books and mystery novels. Born in Rahway, New Jersey, and deaf from childhood after an illness, she worked as a librarian before becoming one of the most prolific authors of her time, with some 170 books. She edited anthologies of nonsense and parody verse, wrote the popular Patty and Marjorie series for girls, and created the detective Fleming Stone, hero of dozens of mysteries. She also wrote an early handbook on the technique of the mystery story.
