Charles John Cutcliffe Wright Hyne (1866–1944) was an English novelist and short-story writer, born in Gloucestershire and raised in Yorkshire, who turned a love of travel and the sea into a long career in popular fiction. He was best known in his lifetime for the stories of Captain Kettle, a small, fierce, red-bearded Welsh sea captain who appeared in Pearson's Magazine from 1895 and in a dozen books. The Lost Continent, his romance of the fall of Atlantis, has outlasted the rest of his work and is counted among the classics of early fantasy. He also wrote under the pseudonym Weatherby Chesney.
