C. H. W. Johns

Claude Hermann Walter Johns (1857–1920) was an English Assyriologist and clergyman. Educated at Queens' College, Cambridge, he combined parish work with the study of cuneiform and became one of the first teachers of Assyriology at Cambridge and at King's College, London. He published the four-volume Assyrian Deeds and Documents, an early English translation of the Code of Hammurabi (1903), Babylonian and Assyrian Laws, Contracts and Letters (1904) and Ancient Babylonia, making the legal and economic records of Mesopotamia available to English readers. He served as Master of St. Catharine's College, Cambridge, from 1909 to 1919.
