Sir Charles Harding Firth (1857–1936) was an English historian of seventeenth-century Britain. Born in Sheffield into a family of steelmakers, he studied at Oxford and spent his career there, becoming Regius Professor of Modern History in 1904. He edited the Clarke Papers and other sources on the Civil War and Interregnum, and wrote Oliver Cromwell and the Rule of the Puritans in England, Cromwell's Army and The Last Years of the Protectorate. A tireless researcher, he also campaigned for professional training in history at Oxford and helped shape the modern study of the period.
