Charles Bertram Black was a Scottish writer of guidebooks in the second half of the nineteenth century, a member of the Edinburgh publishing family of Adam and Charles Black. His guides, issued under his own name, covered France in several volumes, the Riviera, Switzerland, Belgium and the Rhine, Spain, Corsica, the Channel Islands and the English spas, and were known for their practical information on railways and roads, their maps and plans and their frank ratings of hotels. They went through many editions as travel on the Continent became commonplace for British tourists. The details of his life are little recorded.
