Brigham Young (1801–1877) was the second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the founder of Salt Lake City. Born in Vermont and a carpenter by trade, he joined the church in 1832 and became one of its apostles. After the murder of Joseph Smith in 1844, he led the main body of the Saints west across the plains to the valley of the Great Salt Lake in 1847, and directed the settlement of hundreds of communities across the region. He served as the first governor of Utah Territory and founded what became Brigham Young University and the University of Utah.
