Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius (c. 480–524) was a Roman aristocrat, scholar and statesman who served the Gothic king Theodoric as consul and master of offices while setting out to translate the whole of Plato and Aristotle into Latin. He completed the logical works of Aristotle, wrote treatises on arithmetic and music that were used for a thousand years, and composed theological tracts on the Trinity. Accused of treason, he was imprisoned at Pavia and there wrote The Consolation of Philosophy before being executed. The book became one of the most read in medieval Europe, and he was venerated as a martyr under the name Saint Severinus.
