1 book to read online

Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford, first Baron Redesdale (1837–1916), was a British diplomat, collector and writer. After service in St. Petersburg and Peking, he was posted to the British legation in Japan in the 1860s, during the upheavals that ended the shogunate, and drew on that experience for Tales of Old Japan, published in 1871, which introduced English readers to the story of the Forty-Seven Ronin. He later served as secretary to the Office of Works, sat in Parliament, created a famous bamboo garden at Batsford, and wrote memoirs. He was the grandfather of the Mitford sisters.
