Augustin Challamel

Augustin Challamel (1818–1894) was a French historian and man of letters who worked for many years as a librarian at the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève in Paris. He wrote popular histories of France and its people, illustrated works on the history of costume, and books on the Revolution and the society of his own century. His Histoire de la mode en France, which follows the dress of French women from the Gallo-Roman period to the Second Empire, was translated into English as The History of Fashion in France (1882). He treated fashion as a serious mirror of national manners and politics.
