August Mau (1840–1909) was a German archaeologist who devoted his career to Pompeii. Born in Kiel, he worked for the German Archaeological Institute in Rome, spending summers among the ruins and winters studying his findings. His History of Decorative Wall Painting in Pompeii (1882) set out the division of Roman wall painting into four styles, a classification still used today. For English-speaking readers he wrote Pompeii, Its Life and Art, translated by Francis W. Kelsey and first published in 1899, a guide to the buildings and daily life of the buried city that went through several editions.
