Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842–1900) was an English composer. A chorister at the Chapel Royal and the first holder of the Mendelssohn Scholarship, he studied in Leipzig and made his name with incidental music for The Tempest. He wrote symphonic and choral works, hymn tunes including "Onward, Christian Soldiers," the song "The Lost Chord" and the grand opera Ivanhoe, but he is remembered above all for the fourteen comic operas written with the librettist W. S. Gilbert, among them H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado. He was knighted in 1883.
