Arthur Anthony Macdonell (1854–1930) was a British scholar of Sanskrit. Born in Muzaffarpur in northern India, the son of an army officer, he was educated in Germany at Göttingen and at Oxford, where he studied with Max Müller and in 1899 became Boden Professor of Sanskrit. His work centered on the Vedas: Vedic Mythology, A Vedic Grammar and, with A. B. Keith, the Vedic Index of Names and Subjects. His Sanskrit-English Dictionary and Sanskrit grammar served generations of students, and A History of Sanskrit Literature (1900) introduced the subject to general readers in English.
