Alice Mabel Bacon (1858–1918) was an American teacher and writer on Japan. As a girl in New Haven she grew up with Yamakawa Sutematsu, one of the first Japanese girls sent to study in the United States, who lived with her family for years. Bacon later taught in Tokyo at the Peeresses' School and helped Tsuda Umeko found a school for women's higher education there. Between her stays she taught at the Hampton Institute in Virginia. Her books, including Japanese Girls and Women (1891) and A Japanese Interior, give detailed and sympathetic accounts of Japanese domestic life.
