Alice M. Hayes was an English horsewoman and author of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the wife of Captain M. Horace Hayes, the veterinary surgeon whose books on horses were standard works. Traveling with her husband through India, Ceylon, China, South Africa and Europe, she rode and schooled horses of every kind and gave exhibitions of breaking difficult animals to the side-saddle. The Horsewoman: A Practical Guide to Side-Saddle Riding, first published in 1893 and revised in 1903, drew on that experience and on her husband's technical knowledge; it covers saddlery, dress, the seat, hunting and the management of difficult horses.
