Married to the folklorist George Laurence Gomme, a founder of the Folklore Society, she collected singing games, rhymes and play customs from across Britain. Her Traditional Games of England, Scotland, and Ireland (1894–1898), in two volumes, recorded hundreds of games with their tunes, words and methods of play, and remains the foundation of the field. With Cecil Sharp she published Children's Singing Games, and she was a founding member of the English Folk Dance Society. She became Lady Gomme when her husband was knighted.
