Alexandre Dumas fils (1824–1895) was a French novelist and playwright, the son of the author of The Three Musketeers. He is remembered above all for La Dame aux Camélias (1848), the story of the courtesan Marguerite Gautier, which he turned into a play in 1852 and which Verdi reworked as La traviata the following year. His later plays, moral dramas about marriage, illegitimacy and money, made him one of the most performed dramatists of the Second Empire. He was elected to the Académie française in 1874, an honor his father never received.
