Alexander van Millingen (1840–1915) was a historian of Byzantine Constantinople who spent almost his whole life in the city where he was born, the son of a physician who had attended Byron at Missolonghi. Educated in Edinburgh, he was pastor of the Union Church of Pera and from 1879 professor of history at Robert College, the American college on the Bosporus. His two books, Byzantine Constantinople: The Walls of the City and Adjoining Historical Sites and Byzantine Churches in Constantinople, were based on years of measuring and photographing the monuments and are still consulted.
