Alexander Mackenzie

Alexander Mackenzie (1838–1898) was a Scottish journalist and historian of the Highlands. Born near Gairloch in Wester Ross, he settled in Inverness, where he founded and edited the Celtic Magazine and later the Scottish Highlander newspaper, and campaigned for the rights of crofters. His History of the Highland Clearances (1883) gathered evidence of the evictions that had emptied the glens. He also wrote a series of clan histories, of the Mackenzies, the Macdonalds, the Camerons, the Macleods and others, and collected The Prophecies of the Brahan Seer, a book of Highland legend that is still in print.
