Alexander Hislop
1 book to read online
Alexander Hislop was the Scottish compiler of The Proverbs of Scotland, a collection of the country's traditional sayings arranged alphabetically, with explanatory and illustrative notes and a glossary of Scots words. The revised and enlarged edition of 1868 was issued in Edinburgh by Alexander Hislop and Company, and its preface surveys the earlier collectors, from Archbishop Beaton and the minister David Fergusson onward. The book records the wit, thrift and plain sense of Scottish speech, from farm and kitchen to kirk and courtroom, and helped preserve many sayings that were passing out of everyday use.
