Andrew Taylor Still (1828–1917) was an American physician and the founder of osteopathy. The son of a Methodist preacher and doctor, he grew up on the Missouri frontier and learned medicine largely through apprenticeship. After three of his children died of meningitis in 1864, he lost faith in the drug-based medicine of his day and developed a system of treatment based on manipulation of the bones and muscles, which he named osteopathy. In 1892 he founded the American School of Osteopathy in Kirksville, Missouri. His books include an Autobiography, Philosophy of Osteopathy (1899) and The Philosophy and Mechanical Principles of Osteopathy.
