Alpheus Hyatt Verrill (1871–1954) was an American naturalist, explorer, illustrator and writer, the son of the Yale zoologist Addison Emery Verrill. He explored the West Indies and Central and South America for museums, discovered the autochrome process of natural-color photography, and wrote more than a hundred books on subjects from knots and radio to the Indians of the Americas and the romance of the sea, many of them for young readers. In the 1920s and 1930s he was a regular contributor of science fiction to Amazing Stories. Knots, Splices and Rope Work (1917) is among the most reprinted of his practical handbooks.
