A. Hamilton Thompson

A. Hamilton Thompson (1873–1952) was an English historian and antiquary, a leading authority on medieval church history and architecture. Educated at Cambridge, he lectured for many years in university extension work before becoming professor of history at the University of Leeds. He edited a long series of medieval episcopal registers and visitation records for the dioceses of Lincoln and York, and wrote widely on English parish churches, abbeys and castles. His Military Architecture in England During the Middle Ages, published in 1912, traced the development of English fortification from earthworks to the fortified manor house.
