A. De Herries Smith was a Canadian writer of northern adventure fiction who published in the American pulp magazines, chiefly Adventure and Short Stories, in the 1920s and 1930s. His stories, among them The Arctic Legions, are set in the Barren Lands and the sub-Arctic forests and feature the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Indian and Inuit hunters and the long winter trail, told with a feeling for landscape and a plain, hard style. He appears to have known the country at first hand. Beyond his magazine appearances, which continued for more than a decade, almost nothing about his life is on record.
